Carlson Maritime Travel with Distinctive Tours invites you to visit Germany in 2020 to experience the world-famous PASSION PLAY. A theatrical tradition since 1634, the world's most revered Passion Plays are much-anticipated reenactment of the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ. From His entry into Jerusalem to the Resurrection, this play is performed only once a decade in the quaint Bavarian village of OBERAMMERGAU. This is your chance to become part of history. An opportunity that arises once every ten years is an opportunity not to be missed. We will depart Thursday, September 24th from Tampa for Munich and return Saturday October 3rd.
Depart Tampa (or your hometown city) for Munich
Arrival into Munich, transfer to Berchtesgaden. Afternoon free. This evening we meet and enjoy an amazing Welcome Dinner.
Day 3: (B,D) Breakfast at your hotel Dinner at your hotel
Midmorning orientation and introduction to the area by our tour host who will assist you the entire week. Our hotel, HOTEL GRUENBERGER in Berchtesgaden is centrally located and you may wish to spend the rest of the day getting acquainted with this beautiful part of the Bavarian Alps. Dinner this evening.
Day 4: (B,D) Breakfast at your hotel Dinner at your hotel
Your morning is at leisure. Early afternoon we begin a ½ day excursion to Ramsau and the famous church in the Magic Forest and Lake Hintersee. A special “Hiking Bus” takes you to Hirschbich. This excursion is within the area’s Alpine National Park exposing grandiose and imposing peaks at the foot of the Reiteralm mountain range. Dinner this evening.
Day 5: (B,D) Breakfast at your hotel Dinner at your hotel
After breakfast we join fellow travelers on a trip across enchanting Lake Koenigsee (King’s Lake). Your electric boat glides along the shores to the peninsula of St. Bartholomew, famous for its chapel and historic buildings. For the afternoon we suggest a fun trip visiting the former Salt Mines where you dress in miner’s overalls before entering the Berchtesgaden Salt Mountain. A small train takes you through a world full of surprises. Dinner this evening.
Day 6: (B,D) Breakfast at your hotel Dinner at your hotel
Today we venture to Eagle’s Nest, Hitler’s former Tea House. Built in 1938, Eagle’s Nest is considered a unique architectural masterpiece anchored 6,000 feet above Berchtesgaden. It was constructed at a time when no special equipment was available and was a gift to Hitler by the party on his 50th birthday. Learn about the construction, history, and state of affairs around Berchtesgaden. Transfer by bus to Obersalzberg, then take a special coach on the spectacular Mountain Road to Eagle’s Nest.
Afternoon we visit the gentian (Enzian) distillery famous for “Grassl Schnapps” and learn the history of a 400 year old tradition distilling the roots of the Gentian Flower, followed by souvenir shopping. Dinner this evening.
Day 7: (B,D) Breakfast at your hotel Dinner at your hotel
Today we will have a leisurely morning and depart around noon for a trip to Munich to the Oktoberfest and enjoy a day of fun and um-pah-pa music with beer and Bavarian sausages. Drink, dance, shop, enjoy all that Oktoberfest has to offer! Dinner this evening. (Departures in May and July will not visit the Oktoberfest as it does not operate in those month, instead we will visit Munich and include additional highlights to be determined)
Day 8: (B,D) Breakfast at your hotel Dinner at your hotel
Today we have a full day excursion to the Mozart City of Salzburg with its illustrious history and ornate Baroque architecture. This city also has an artistic heritage that rivals Europe’s capitals. Explore the city “in the footsteps of Mozart”, a true son of Salzburg. We then continue to tour the countryside where we see some of the sights of “The Sound of Music” movie. Dinner this evening.
Day 9: (B,D) Breakfast at your hotel Dinner at your hotel
Today we transfer via Germany’s Alpine Road to Oberammergau for the PASSION PLAY performance. Good seating, dinner and overnight with breakfast is included as well. (Hotel in Oberammergau TBA)
Passion Play is performed in two parts. It starts at 1:30pm-4:00pm. There is a break for dinner and shopping. The play resumes at 7:00pm-9:30pm
Day 10: October 3rd: (B) Breakfast at your hotel Dinner at your hotel
Transfer to Munich for our flight home.
